Overview
Progressing cavity pumps are essential to the safe, efficient operation of a modern biogas plant. Biogas is a mixture of gases released as organic food and waste material breaks down. It can be produced from a wide range of feedstocks — importantly including recycled waste — and is now recognised as a vital renewable energy source with a much-reduced carbon footprint, often qualifying for government subsidies worldwide.
Biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion: the slow natural reaction caused by anaerobic bacteria in biodegradable materials such as food waste, raw sewage, plant material and crops. It is mainly methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), with possible trace amounts of hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) and siloxanes. The resulting gases can be combusted or oxidised to release energy, driving a turbine to generate electricity or heat.
This is where pump design demands careful consideration — potentially compressible, explosive and hazardous gases combine with abrasive siloxanes. The Sydex Bio-G range uses a purpose-designed hopper and auger system, optimised for efficient conveying in tough, wear-resistant materials while eliminating the risk of hazardous compression. Sydex is ATEX and ISO 9001 (TÜV Nord) certified, giving you the reassurance you need for critical equipment on your biogas plant.
Built for reliability, the Bio-G pairs a heavy-duty, high-quality bearing housing and a heavy-duty carbon steel hopper with Sydex's heavy-duty 'U' joint system, while large removable cover plates make maintenance quick and straightforward. There is no compression within the pump chamber, the hopper is shaped to prevent solids building up on its sides, and the auger ensures efficient conveying; sealing can be specified as Teflon packing with a flush ring or as a mechanical seal. Detailed performance figures are available on request — please contact Sydex for the full specification. Typical applications include biogas plants, anaerobic digestion and renewable energy generation, which is why it is recommended across the Biogas and Recycling & Waste sectors.
